cashier crash

i went to safeway tonight to pick up some food for dinner. i originally had grand plans of making stew with this special “tasty brown sauce mix” that my mom gave me on one of my visits home, but alas, there were problems at the grocery store.

what could go wrong at the grocery store, one might ask? what could go wrong, indeed!

well, i got all of my food and as it was being rung up, everything seemed fine. but then on the very last item (potatoes) the scale wouldn’t weigh out the item. the cashier kept trying over and over to scan it and weigh it to no avail. she kept cleaning the sensor, wiping it down, brushing it aside, but the same telling beeps came from the cash register.

finally a manager came to see what was up after a long line of customers were waiting. i was beginning to grow a little impatient, myself. the manager proceeded to repeat what the cashier had already done numerous times only to confirm that, yes, indeed! the scale is not measuring the weight of the potatoes.

finally, she rings up the potatoes on another register to find out how much it costs and that item is added to my tally. but as the total is being added up, the register freezes. i don’t know what happened to it, but it seemed to have died. and so, again, the manager comes to observe what has happened and she pushes some buttons on the machine which seems to anger it as it beeps louder and longer with each keypress.

finally, i tell them that i don’t need a receipt, i’m ok and i’ll just go now.

so i’m not sure if i really got charged for all the food i got, but i think i did.

anyway, i got home and it was pretty late and i was pretty tired so instead of making the stew with the “tasty brown sauce mix”, i made ramen instead.

flat tire

before going to work today, i noticed that my rear right tire seemed a little low on air. a closer inspection yielded a screw that was wedged into the tire. lovely.

so i went around the corner to the local gas station for them to fix it and the guy there tells me that because it is my rear right tire, he’s going to have to take the tire off so that he can get to the screw.

ok…

and then he tells me that it’s going to cost me $30 more for him to remove my tire, patch the tire, and put the tire back on.

uhhh…$30 to take the tire off and put it back on?? yup. and then i ask, well, what if i came here with just the tire? he then informs me that it would then just got the $10 to patch the tire. so i’m thinking, ok…well, i can jack up the car and remove the tire. no big deal.

and then i thought…well, wait, why would i want to do that? so i told the guy that i might be back later and i went across the street to the other gas station and explained the situation to them.

oh sure, they can fix the leak without removing the tire, no problem, they tell me. and so they get the little kit and patch the tire and i’m on my way to work.

man…the things people will charge you for in ridiculous.

kissing jessica stein

i saw kissing jessica stein last night. i wasn’t sure if i would be able to get into it because i wasn’t sure if i could relate to the whole lesbian love story. but this movie isn’t a statement about lesbian romance, but more a story of love….it just happens to be about two women. i must say that the whole story was just charming. i really enjoyed this movie quite a bit.

now i know that dardy had been raving about it for some time, but i didn’t get the opportunity to watch it until netflix finally sent it to me…and i’m very tempted to watch the movie again. i think it was just that good.

hard drive

i heard about the compusa deal with the seagate 200GB hard drive for $100. i wasn’t sure if i should get in on it or not, but i have been having some hard drive concerns lately, so i decided to drop by the local compusa and pick up a drive. it turns out that i ended up with the last hard drive at the emeryville store. phew! so last night after getting out of poker pretty early, i decided to do the hard drive install. the case that comes with the dell is pretty nice, but the cables provided do not really give you much flexibility in terms of where you can put what. i actually had to shuffle around some things in the case so that my hard drive would fit.

my computer is actually a little bit louder now because of the new spinning hard drive. initially, i was going to retire one of my smaller hard drives, but i decided to leave everything in there. my computer is now happily running off of three hard drives, 120GB, 75GB, and the new 200GB, give me just under half a terabyte of hard drive space. now, the question is, how can i fill it all up? now that i’ve doubled my capacity, i think that i may start looking into downloading old tv episodes of some of my favorite shows.

ahhh, the possibilities are endless.

thursdays

at work on thursdays, the company provides snacks for us. in the morning there are donuts and bagels. donuts. i think the company gets about 4 dozen donuts and it would be a shame to let all those donuts go to waste. i sort of feel obligated to make sure that no donut is left to waste.

this, of course, has rather disturbing repercussions. i must gain 5 pounds every thursday as a result of this. i’m not sure what i can do about this. i have to help the donuts fulfill their donut destiny. i’m really their savior. even at the expense of my own health, i will do my best to make sure that no donut is left behind. this is my burden, this is my life.
