nerd am i

i know, this is going to sound totally lame, but i just received my order of brand new NiMH batteries and i am totally excited. really, very excited. as i type this, i realize how completely lame it is to be this excited, but i am.

i’ve been reading up on what brand of battery to buy and what the best way is to charge them because i’ve been buying really cheap AA batteries in the past and they are great for a little while, but after a little while they just suck. they lose their capacitance and and are generally worthless.

so i’ve done some research and i decided to buy a new charger and a new set of batteries. it turns out that your battery charger can lower the lifespan of your battery. who knew?

i have been reading up on batteries and decided to splurge a little (especially after i’ve now bought 2 sets of 16 AA batteries which all pretty much suck now) and get some decent batteries. fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me, right? yeah, well, shame on me, indeed.

so i bit the bullet and bought the sanyo 2700mAh rechargeable batteries. they aren’t cheap, but i hear it is the battery to get. i also got the maha travel charger, which is supposed to be a smart conditioning charger. who knew that batteries needed so much attention. i’ve never heard of such high maintainence batteries before.

we’ll see how it performs in my lighting gear when i do a shoot in low light next week.

  1. Mr. W just did that, too, for his new camera. But he got the Energizer brand. When we were in Hearst, I went thru my 2 rechargeables, “borrowed” 2 of his old rechargeables he brought along as spare, burned those out, “borrowed” his last 2, burned those out before the tour was over. And I wasn’t using flash that much cuz we’re not allowed to flash indoors on the expensive paintings and stuff. Mr. W, meanwhile, stayed on his 4 new NiMH batteries the entire time and NEVER replaced them.

  2. Wait, we checked; they’re Duracell. And apparently, he didn’t change batteries the ENTIRE WEEKEND, it wasn’t just during the Castle tours.

  3. it also depends on the camera. some cameras are more energy efficient than others. i’m excited to try out my new flash, though. i hope they last a long time.
