not hungry today

it’s weird. i went home to make some lunch and eat something, but by the time i got home, i wasn’t really that hungry. in fact, i just thought to myself that it’s weird that i haven’t had anything to eat all day today and i’m not famished. what is going on?

it wasn’t until JUST NOW that i realized that i had a donut today at work. it was glorious. i haven’t eaten a donut in ages. it’s hard for me to imagine that i used to eat two or three of those things every other day.

i have been having strange food cravings recently. i ate at gochi the other day, this japanese fusion restaurant in cupertino. i have always been pretty skeptical of any kind of fusion because, for me, it usually tastes like some americanized-[insert culture here] food. and when it comes to japanese food, i actually am a purist. i didn’t eat rolls of any kind until recently. so when i heard that we were going to gochi i was cautiously excited. people have described the food at gochi to be phenomenal. so i was a little excited to try it out, but at the same time, i was a little nervous because i haven’t had great japanese fusion food experiences.

let me tell you, gochi disappointed. some of the dishes were pretty tasty (i think that i would probably only eat from the deep fried menu items — which were FANTASTIC, by the way), but the rest of the dishes were not really my cup of tea. cheese casseroles in a japanese restaurant? a japanese pizza? ugh. i just stopped thinking it was japanese food and then it started to taste better. portions were on the smaller side, not awful, but not generous.

the waitresses there were pretty cute though and from what i could tell japanese. i still stand by the observation that only 5% of japanese girls are cute and 95% are UGLY, but the 5% that are cute are REALLY cute. japanese men, however, are all attractive. *ahem* =P

microwaving hot chocolate

it seems that i learned a valuable lesson table. if you try to microwave hot chocolate, keep a close eye on it.

i microwaved some hot chocolate and left it unattended for a minute. when i opened the microwave half of my hot chocolate had boiled over onto the floor of the microwave. it was a huge sticky mess.

the sad part is that now that most of my hot chocolate is gone, i am stuck with the difficult decision of whether or not to make another new cup or just suck it up and just drink water.

ahhh, these are the problems that one faces on a friday afternoon.

battlestar galactica: razor

i went to see the battlestar galactica razor premiere at santana row earlier this week. it was a cold evening and we went to see the 10PM showing. i was sort of expecting there to be mobs of people and the cinearts theatres are pretty small, so i wasn’t sure if i was going to be able to get seated or not.

it turns out that there were plenty of seats available (even though you needed to pre-register for the event and they would check your ID and name at the door to let you in).

instead of a stamp, they had a permanent red marker and they would draw a line on your hand to designate that you were allowed into the theater. i like to think that they choose the fat red marker because it looks like the cylon red eye, but i doubt that that was why it was chosen.

i was also hoping for some kind of giveaway, but alas there was nothing. how cool would it have been to have a poster hung up somewhere in the house when christi came home? it would have been funny.

anyway, i LOVED it. i don’t think that’s just the battlestar galactica withdrawal speaking, either. it’s supposed to air on the scifi network and later be released on DVD soon. if you haven’t seen it and are a fan of the show, definitely check it out.

the best scene in the movie was definitely the homage to the original series. there were some great laugh out loud moments (something that you don’t do much in the series) mixed in with some shocking, jaw dropping moments. drama, comedy, and action…what more could you ask for?

my brilliance is left unnoticed

my fantasy football team name is it sucks to be me. this is from a song in the musical avenue q. every week, for the smack talk, i use some lyric from the music. i think it’s BRILLIANT, but i am willing to bet that no one else in my league appreciates my humor.

some past smack talks were:
“it sucks to be you”
“there’s a fine, fine line between what you wanted and what you got”
“i’m gonna find my purpose”
“you can be as loud as the hell you want”

i know i’m the only one laughing, but, dude, i crack myself up.

photos have arrived

the photos from our professional photographer have finally arrived. there are 4 DVDs full of images waiting to be seen. they images come all processed so we shouldn’t have to do much to them (we’ll see, though!). i’m sure that the images will eventually be touched in some way before being sent to the gallery. speaking of the gallery, i’ve been working on a new format for the gallery. i’ve grown a little tired of the way that it looks now so hopefully i’ll be able to finish up the new look just in time to post all of the wedding images.

the thing that kills me about viewing wedding images or anybody’s photo gallery is when they post too many images. i get overwhelmed and even if the images look great, i can’t get myself to go through all of them. i probably am guilty of underposting images in the gallery, but after a while, they all start to look the same to me. images of the wedding to come soon!

company holiday party

the company had a halloween potluck last week. i dressed up as a disgruntled employee instead of being the usual happy employee that i usually am. or was it that i told people that i dressed up as a happy employee instead of the usually disgruntled employee? hmmm, tough call. =P

one of my co-workers brought in dry ice to put into apple cider. i asked him if it was food grade dry ice and he looked at me like i was on crack. dude, there is such a thing! and they make it because the normal dry ice isn’t meant to be consumed. right??

guitar hero 3 – enter the addiction

i think christi’s new goal in life is to get as many other people addicted to guitar hero as she is. i think that i’ve pretty much gone as far as i can in the game, but i’ll give it another whirl. i still have to 5 star the songs, most of my attempts are in the 3 star area. what does it all mean? it just means i have a lot more to play.

we had a few friends come over for a volleyball review/coaching session. after watching the video of the games that i had recorded, guitar hero was broken out and a good time was had. the above picture is aimee rocking it out, complete with head banging goodness.

super salted steak

after reading an article on how to turn cheap choice steaks in gucci prime steaks, i knew that i would have to try it out.

it’s easy to do: super salt your steak for about 15 minutes, rinse, and cook. i got 4 costco steaks, cooked two in the normal way that i would normally cook them and two in this way. the instructions require you to use sea salt or some other coarse salt, but i didn’t have any, so i decided to really oversalt my steaks, hoping that the table salt would be enough to encourage the moisture from the steak to come out.

the results? the super salted steak really did seem to be more tender than the control group! pretty amazing. i think i waited too long after i had salted them, though. i think next time a 10 minute salting will be more than sufficient. i will also marinade it with other seasonings because it was just salty, good, but i can definitely see the potential for it to be GREAT.

the lesson learned here is that when using a dry rub, let the rub work its way into the meat at room temperature. 10 minutes can make a huge difference!

broken water heater

our water heater developed a leak and we had to get it replaced. luckily the water heater was covered under the house warranty so we didn’t have to worry so much about having to pay the whole thing out of pocket. it’s just another one of those things that can just go wrong in your house. how does it feel to be a home owner? still good, but man, there’s a lot of stuff that comes along with it.

and speaking of stuff that comes with being a home owner, no home should go owned without a wii and guitar hero. i took a break from playing it yesterday because i’m getting too frustrated with it, but i think that i’ll be back on tonight!

there’s one song on medium that is just killing me. knights of cydonia by muse. i just can’t get it. it is my nemesis. oh, how i loathe you. but just you wait, i will conquer you!

earthquake!

did you feel the earthquake? where’s the epicenter? oh, MY BACKYARD! it felt HUGE. a 5.6 is nothing to scoff at, but i swear, it felt HUGE!

everything was shaking and moving around, but we’re all just fine.

phones were out for a brief while, i couldn’t get a call out. i think it’s from everyone using the phone to call everyone they knew to make sure that they were all ok.
