forgetting to shave

i have this rather nasty habit to forget to shave from time to time. the problem is that i usually remember that i forgot to shave about 10 minutes into my commute to work. this is the most inconvenient time for me to have remembered that i forgot to shave because it is just far enough away from the apartment for me to want to go back just to shave.

but, one night’s stubble is also just enough to drive me crazy for the rest of the day. so on days that i forget to shave AND i decide not to go back home to shave, i’m left with rubbing my face all day long with the irritating stubble. this is a rather troubling dilemma.

oh…and i am completely incapable of using a razor. i don’t know why, but regardless of how much shaving cream i may use, i will always end up cutting my face if i use a razor.

oh well…it’s a good thing that i didn’t forget to shave today!

the end of an era, part 2

as part of the last day of dee’s tenure at the third street grind, she was throwing a huge lunch party for all. this party consisted of free pizza, beer, quiche, chocolate cake, and truffles! it was a huge feast of goodies and i tried not to eat too much, but after a few slices of beer, cake, and truffles, i feel quite full now.

such decadence so early in the week. i’m not sure how i’m going to go on.

that, with the brandy in the morning is going to make for a rather sluggish day today.

the end of an era

there’s a local coffee shop near work called the third street grind. i’m a fairly regular customer there and i have a regular drink and the occassional donut there…well, more than occassional, but still, not daily. anyhow, today is the last day that the current owner is going to be there and it seems that dee is selling the place off to some new people. now, i don’t know if the place is going to stay the same, but part of the charm of the place is the homey feel that it has. hopefully that won’t be changed with the new ownership.

when dee was making my large white mocha, she asked me if i wanted to have a shot of brandy in it today. i was like, “what?” she said, “do you want a shot of brandy in your drink?” i was like, “uhhh, ok!”

now, i thought that this might have been some kind of brandy flavoring or something, but as she was making my drink my eyes widened when i saw her take out a bottle of REAL brandy and put it in my drink. let me just say that a white mocha tastes DRAMATICALLY different with a little shot of brandy. but it’s actually quite good. i may have to make all of my mochas irish from now on.

it’s too bad that this is only a one time deal.

it’s also too bad that i’m drinking at work.

i wonder if this will affect my judgment.

i wonder if my judgment has already been compromised.

man, i sound like an alcoholic.

oh well, there’s nothing like having a little drinky drink at work, right? i think the last time i drank alcohol at work was back when i was at my first startup. we went to el torrito’s or something and i had a margarita for a farewell lunch for a co-worker. after that i was a little toasty for the rest of the day.

holiday weekend

it was a pleasant holiday weekend with plenty of rest and relaxation. it was just what i needed and though there weren’t too many things that i did over this holiday weekend, i found that it was rather pleasant.

i wanted to go biking, but it rained and made for bad conditions.

i wanted to go get a haircut, but i got a little lazy.

i wanted to make a grand dinner, but had too many leftovers.

i wanted to try out lots of new xbox games…and i did.

yeah, i got my xbox back and now i’m going through a marathon of xbox gaming to see if there are any new games that are worth playing. i think that i play a game for about 15 minutes and then i will decide if it is worth the effort or not. so far, the game that has taken most of my time so far is NBA live 2005. man…that game is just crazy.

happy thanksgiving!

happy thanksgiving to everyone. i hope that you have a very belly stuffing day!

last night i went out with greg, jen, paul, leeya, and charlowe to have dinner at TGI’s sushi. mmmm. i love that place. we had 9 rolls there and it was great. it’s been a long time since i’ve eaten at TGI’s and they are still one of my favorite sushi places around.

after sushi, we went and played no limit hold ’em at greg’s place. greg ended up cleaning house…i was on a good roll too…oh well, all in all, a good way to start off the holiday.

i did the second photoshoot for my pastry chef’s food photography a few days ago. i still haven’t processed all of the photos yet, but i did get a chance to take a look at a few of them. there were peanut butter and jelly filled cookies, muffins, a pumpkin chocolate chip bundt cake, a flourless chocolate cake, a chocolate cake with nuts, some cranberry cake, and truffles. all in all, it was quite appetizing.

i was trying to figure out which one i would have liked to have eaten, but it was really hard not to try and sample a little of everything. and, what’s best was that after the shoot, they were gracious enough to give me samples of everything that was there. mmmmm.

food photography is pretty tricky. i thought that i had tried to learn from the last truffle shoot, but there were still a lot of things that i wish i had done better. oh well, maybe next time.

drunken volleyball

last night to celebrate diana passing the bar, she bought a pitcher of beer for the team. only two others of us showed up, so we finished off the pitcher ourselves. i’m not much of a fan of beer, but we had a pitcher of fat tire which was not nearly as revolting as other beers i’ve samped in the past.

unfortunately, i didn’t really eat much that day and i’m a real lightweight so when we were warming up, i felt a little dizzy…but playing the game…man, that was an altogether interesting experience. i was swinging pretty hard, but had no idea that i was swing as hard as i was until after the games and someone asked me about it. ooops.

all in all, it was good fun, though. maybe i’ll temper my drinking a little bit, but a little drink before the game made for a rather entertaining evening.

meaty adventures

i love meat. this is no secret and i cannot help it. i grew up in a meat-eating household. i don’t think that there was ever a day where we did not have some kind of meat. mystery meat is even good…sometimes. but one of the things that my parents have never really done is grilling. we’ve done some bbq’ing, but not much, and usually when we did grill, it was in the form of burgers.

so whenever i get the chance, i’ll grill up a storm. the biggest thing i’m into now are dry rubs. i don’t know what it is about them, but they can be rather tasty. i have to admit, though, that i’m not much of a fan of the cajun dry rub i’ve made. i’m not sure what it is about it, but the flavor doesn’t really do much for me.

i don’t grill pork chops much, i’m much more of a red meat eater, but because dardy was coming over, i thought that i should give him a non-beef alternative. i think he is the only one of my friends left who is avoiding beef….but he still gave in and ate some anyway.

i have to say that the meat pictures don’t look very appetizing. i don’t know what it is about meat, but it’s hard to make it look good. i’ll have to do some research to find out what people do to make it look more tasty.

still, 2 tri-tips and 3 pork chops later, i have to say that the meal was pretty satisfying. mmmm.

friday’s sundae is today’s root beer float

we had sundaes on friday at work and there were 3 gallons of ice cream bought for the sundae delight. needless to say there’s plenty of leftover ice cream so today i decided to make a root beer float. i think i used about 4 scoops of ice cream this time and i know i’m going to be paying for it later with an upset stomach, but man is it worth it.

i don’t know what it is about root beer floats that compel me to make them super sized, but i can never have a one scoop root beer float. it just doesn’t work like that for me. mmmm…
